Ep 278: Now We Are Six

Six years ago, three guys thought it would be a good idea to start a podcast about television. Back then, only 28 people in the world knew what a podcast was. Now it’s at least twice that.

We brought everyone into the studio to help celebrate. We take a trip down memory lane to when we were six years old. What are our great childhood television memories? How has that shaped our viewing today?

It’s a very special episode of Boxcutters that no person who was ever a child should miss.

@Toby – to save me even thinking about watching this show, what the hell are the fathers doing in that pageant show? How are they portrayed (if at all)?

    Happy Birthday team, great episode!

@Dave, I’ve emailed Josh about this before, but as a new(ish) Dad, my daughter is nearly 2, I highly recommend Sesame Street and Play School when you think your child is old enough, I’m convinced that watching those shows has made my daughter seem well advanced for her age ….. (admittedly I’m biased)

    Bappy Smurfday, Soxbutters!

I was actually driving right past the former site of Channel 10 in Nunawading just as Dave was talking about the Jethopper competition on The Early Bird Show. What I remember from when I was about six, was passing by that studio when it was still called “Channel 0” with a big, fat zero on the side of the building. Across the road from Wobbie’s World, which is also no more.

As a six-year-old, I was only allowed to watch the ABC and SBS, so my Early Bird watching wouldn’t come until a few years later. So, my single-digit years were spent watching Dr Who, The Goodies, Monkey, G-Force, Astroboy, Bananaman, Four Corners and Danger Mouse.

I did get to sit inside KITT once, but unfortunately not in California, he was at the Royal Melbourne Show.

John Richards – I thought I hallucinated that 3D episode of Blah Blah Blah. Now I can take a small step towards sanity, knowing that it might have actually happened.

Here’s another experiment that Josh and his brother performed, also courtesy of the Curiosity Show. This time, in the kitchen:

    1) Get a wooden match
    2) Cover just the head of the match in 1 layer of aluminium foil
    3) Put a pinhole through the foil at the very end of the match head
    4) Balance the match on the edge of the kitchen sink with the foil-covered head end suspended over the void.
    5) Get another match, light it.
    6) Hold the flame under the foil-covered head of the first match
    7) Watch and be amazed!

I think you’re supposed to learn something about jet propulsion from this experiment … or something. Watch your fingers!

  4. Hey Guys, feel free to delete this if you feel it steps over the line regarding content access and piracy

I’m ALWAYS ALWAYS (did I say ALWAYS ?) prepared to pay for my content; to the extent that I use US based computer servers and credit cards to pay for and download music from Amazon and other geographically retarded (aka ‘geotarded’) sites. But for those TV shows that don’t get to Australia or channel BT (usually, but not always, US and UK based political, satire, and current affairs shows), I have found a neat little service ….

I’m currently on the 7 day free trial, but I will definitely pay up my $5 a month. For example, I get access to both Hulu and the BBC’s iPlayer service. I don’t have any financial connection to whoever is behind this (I’m not even a paying customer yet), but I think the more we punish ars****s like Ch 9 for screwing us around, the sooner we will get better treatment from them.
